Thousands of Montegonians benefited from a Health Fair that was held on Saturday, July 1st at Cornwall College as part of the weekend of activities to mark the Class of the 1980s reunion.
The planning committee decided that as part of our community awareness we should do some thing for the community that surrounds the school in an effort to get them to ‘bond’ more with Cornwall.
As early as an hour before the scheduled start, scores of people were taking up positions at the head of lines and waiting for the event to get going.
At least 17 different exhibitors packed the auditorium, some of the Grade nine class rooms and tents around the auditorium and just about any area of shade that could be found.
The exhibitors included the Jamaica Cancer Society, Diabetes Association of Jamaica, Heart Foundation of Jamaica, Wellness Solutions, Blood Bank, Jamaica Association of the Deaf, Blue Cross of Jamaica and Health Corporation Ltd.
Thousands of tests were carried out for blood pressure, blood sugar, ECG, Pap Smear, Blood cholesterol, vision, HIV/AIDS and blood circulation while there were public talks on the National health Fund and Jamaica Drugs for the Elderly programme, chronic illnesses, managing stress and importance of proper nutrition.
The event was carried live on IRIE FM and our chairman Donat did several interviews throughout the day to promote the other events.
The feed back from those who benefited was tremendous as one woman who was interviewed said she “had every test done” as she made sure she had a clean bill of health or at least knew what to be aware of.
