I have no idea what the scores were as I am sure most people who turned up at Cornwall on Saturday or those who watched the game on a very dusty office field. While there was more dirt on the field than when we were in school, 20 years ago, the field is still in a bad shape but the ongoing drought did not help either.
In between the two FIFA World Cup semi-finals, many of the old boys tried to roll back the clock and it was obvious that some boys were a lot fitter than others. Some had continued playing serious ball while some…well let us say they would not make their class teams again.
The idea was to have several six a side games on half of the field with entry fees but given the time between the two WC games and the time it took to get ready and stop laughing at some of the knees and guts on display, the decision was taken to play one game on the big field.
It was also obvious some guys took the game a lot more serious than others as the ’85 class turned up with matching jerseys.
Pity Rev Onell our former DCup winning reserve ‘keeper did not take his place in the goal but handled the whistle instead. That and the lateness of Collin Brydson left the door open for Bulla Gut Buchanan to start for the ’85 group.
It also left the door open for several moments of hilarity, at least until Brydson showed up. Sure we will blame the ‘uneven bounce’ of office field for some of what we saw.
A good run out for most but it is almost sure that several of the wives or girl friends had to use some Epsom salts on some tired and weary muscles on Sunday.
